“You are what you eat!”

Upon a recent visit with a close friend, I was intrigued by the fact that she still had her great grandmother living as well as other members of her family nearing and some surpassing 100 years of age. However, my personal experience is not so fortunate. I was 31 when my grandmother died right before her 90th birthday and she was my last living grandparent. So, I was a little jealous and wanted to know what secret to longevity her family had.

The first point she made was genetics have to enter into the equation. Her example was how sometimes red hair will show up in later generations. Second, was that the work habits probably had the biggest part in their living to an older age. Lastly, foods were raised and processed at home, so there were no additives. They ate what they grew or what was available. The saying then, as well as now, is: “You are what you eat.”
